    Claims & Damage Policy

We take care of your belongings. If something goes wrong, here's exactly how we handle it — no fine print surprises.

    Our Commitment

We Handle Your Belongings with Care

Our crew uses moving blankets, floor runners, door protectors, and proper lifting techniques on every single job. Damage is rare — but we want you to know exactly what happens if something does go wrong.

    📋 Federal Law Protects You

All interstate (long-distance) moves are governed by federal regulations under the FMCSA. For local Virginia moves, state regulations and our company policy apply. You have rights — and we honor them.

    Your Coverage Options

Every move comes with standard liability coverage. You also have the option to purchase additional protection.

    Standard — Included Free

    Released Value Protection

The federally mandated minimum: 60 cents per pound per article. This is included at no cost but provides limited reimbursement for high-value or lightweight items. A 10-lb laptop damaged under this coverage = $6.00 reimbursement.

    Recommended

    Full Value Protection

Covers repair, replacement, or cash settlement at current market value for any damaged or lost item. This is the more comprehensive option and is available for an additional fee quoted before your move.

    💡 Our recommendation:

For any move involving high-value items — electronics, antiques, art, jewelry — we strongly recommend Full Value Protection or a third-party moving insurance policy. Ask us for details when booking.

What Happens If Something Is Damaged

If you notice damage during or after your move, here's the step-by-step process:

    1

    Note It Before We Leave

If you spot damage on move day, point it out to the crew lead immediately. We'll document it together before signing off. Don't wait — noting damage in real time is the most important step.

    2

    Take Photos

Photograph the damaged item and its packaging if applicable. Include close-ups and context shots showing the damage clearly.

    3

    Contact Us Promptly

Reach out within 9 months of your move date (federal requirement for interstate moves). For local moves, contact us as soon as possible. Call (804) 801-8079 or email us at calvin@rvamovers.com.

    4

    Submit a Written Claim

We'll send you a claims form. Include your move date, item description, estimated value, and photos. Be as specific as possible.

    5

    Resolution

We'll acknowledge your claim within 30 days and resolve it within 120 days. Depending on your coverage, resolution may be repair, replacement, or cash settlement.

    What Is Not Covered

The following are generally excluded from coverage:

    • ×Items packed by the customer (boxes you packed yourself)
    • ×Pre-existing damage to furniture or items
    • ×Electronics that power on but have internal issues not caused by the move
    • ×Perishable items, plants, or live animals
    • ×Jewelry, cash, documents, or other valuables not disclosed before the move
    • ×Items of extraordinary value (artwork, antiques) unless declared and additional coverage purchased
    • ×Damage resulting from improper packing by the customer

Prevention: How We Protect Your Items

The best claim is the one that never needs to happen. On every RVA Movers job:

Moving blankets are used on all furniture. Floor runners and door jamb protectors guard your home at both locations. Shrink wrap is used on upholstered items. Heavy items are loaded with proper dollies and straps. Our crew is trained — not just hired off the street.
