Important things to look for when hiring movers
It is vital that you conduct a background check about the mover company you’re considering. Check some moving reviews online to see what other customers are telling about this moving business you are about to hire. There are many places to do that online. Make sure you share your moving experience after the move.
Ask for a guaranteed binding estimate via e-mail. Many moving companies offer free moving quotes, many of which are pretty close to the final amount. Make sure you check all aspects of the move and all moving fees that may apply. Also request the packing supplies price list before the move.

The FIRST STEP is to make sure you have enough packing supplies to complete your moving job. I can’t think of ANYTHING worse than having to scramble around on the day before or morning of your move, trying to find extra boxes. Which brings us to our first set of tips:
- ORDER PLENTY OF BOXES FOR YOUR MOVE BECAUSE YOU NEVER KNOW!!!
The old saying—it’s better to be safe than sorry, couldn’t be more true! It’s much easier to deal with extra boxes than it is to find more at the last minute. Plus, if you order boxes from RVA Movers, we’ll take the unused ones back. Give us a call and order your boxes! 1.804-801-8079 - PACKING BOXES COME IN ALL SIZES
When picking out boxes for your move, be sure to get a variety of sizes. Think critically about the items you need to pack up. While you might think you need just a bunch of large boxes, you’ll probably need more small and medium sized boxes, since most things pack better in them. Get a few wardrobe boxes, many medium and definitely a lot of small boxes.
Packing is a lot like an artform. It’s much more than just throwing your things in random boxes. If you want to make sure your stuff arrives at your new home safely (and is easy to find!), you want to make sure you pack smartly. We at RVA Movers, are huge fans of the video game Tetris. A popular game in which finding the correct shapes to fill the holes are the main strategy to win the game. We apply these same skills to moving. Throwing a bunch of items in large boxes, and not being careful and strategic often leads to claims, and damaged goods. We take GREAT LENGTHS to ensure that every item is carefully packed, securely loaded and arrives in the client’s destination in the same condition it left in. - DON’T FORGET THE OTHER ESSENTIAL MOVING SUPPLIES…THIS IS IMPORTANT!!!
Okay you’ve ordered enough boxes, but you also don’t want to run out of tape! Make sure you have more than you think you’ll need, just in case. It’s also smart to purchase a tape gun to help make box assembly a little faster. Make sure you grab packing paper and everything else you’ll need too! We sell a variety of MOVING SUPPLIES, so make sure you order all those extras when you’re ordering your boxes. - KEEP YOUR FRAGILE ITEMS SAFE
Group delicate items together and make sure to label them as fragile. This is in my opinion one of the most important things you can do to protect your belongings. Also your movers will know which boxes need extra care, and can place them in the right spots in the moving van. Example, you never want to pack and load a fragile item, such as a lampshade under a heavy box, or boxes. Careless packing and loading oftens leads to unhappy customers. We at RVA Movers don’t want unhappy customers! - PAPER PACKING
When packing those delicate items, use proper packing paper instead of newspaper to avoid smears and stains on your valuables. FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR SUPPLIES.That way, you won’t have to give everything a scrub down before you put it away at your new home.
Top Secrete Moving Tips From RVA Movers
When you take the time to pack up all your items the smart way, you’ll be making things much easier on yourself when it comes time to unpack in your new home. Follow these packing rules to make sure nothing gets misplaced. Organizing your new home will be easy!
- LABEL YOUR BOXES
This one is a no-brainer: Label each box so you know EXACTLY what’s in it, and which room it goes in. This will make unpacking much easier on you. Little things like this go A LONG WAY in ensuring that your move goes as smoothly as possible! - THE GOLDEN NUGGET THAT MANY MOVERS WON’T TELL YOU
ALWAYS remember this fact, theheavier the item, the smaller the box! It’s far easier for your mover to carry the heavier items when they’re in smaller boxes. Your larger boxes should be for your lighter items, that while being light, aren’t easy to carry on their own. You should never stuff a box to capacity. That is a no-no and this can lead to damaged items, which we don’t want. Right? DESIGNATE ONE BOX, FOR ONE ROOM
Should pack items from the same room in the same box. Don’t mix. This way unpacking is easy and less stressful. You should understand by now that we’re ALL ABOUT careful planning and execution. That is our motto…
But wait, there’s more…
- NO PACKING ON MOVING DAY
Take on this busy day with all of your boxes already packed. It’s one less stress. This also includes things like removing all pictures from the walls before moving day.
Moving Tips When Working With Movers
Your team of professional movers is there to help. So you can help them out by making sure they have all the information they need. Here are a few things you can do to help your team out on moving day.
- LAST IN, FIRST OUT
Tell us which boxes you need first at your new home and we’ll load it last on our trucks. That way, you won’t have to go searching for those important items. - FINISH PACKING BEFORE MOVING DAY
We repeat: no packing on moving day! Have everything ready to roll when the team shows up. - KEEP YOUR MOST IMPORTANT THINGS WITH YOU
We asking that customer NEVER PACK CASH, jewelry (such as rings), or prescription medications – these items should always be kept with you. You might need to access them on moving day, and it’s nice for the movers if they know they don’t need to worry about keeping track of these small, but very important items. - PLAN OUT THE DETAILS AHEAD OF TIME
We ask our customers always ahead of time to let your mover know where they can park the truck, how they can best access your apartment or residence, and if there are any time restriction on parking or move hours. There is NOTHING WORSE than being halfway into a move and having to abruptly stop your move, to reposition the truck. - PREP YOUR FURNITURE
If you have any heavy or breakable items in your dressers and desks, please remove those items so they’re easier to lift. Just this little trick alone and save the mover tons of time and helps the owner as well in the long run. It can also be beneficial to disassemble bedroom sets, which will also save time on moving day. Another good tip is to designate one dresser drawer for sheets and towels, to prevent having to rummage through a bunch of boxes the first night in your home.
